FALL
TERM IN GRENOBLE, FRANCE
APPLICATION FORM
ELIGIBILITY:
The program is for seniors in good standing who, if they spend the fall off campus, will be able to complete their diploma requirements either before or after the term away. It is designed principally for three and four year students who, having reached an advanced level in many of our courses, including French, have a special interest in French language and culture and wish to deepen their knowledge by living and studying in France. Enrollment in the program is not likely to exceed 12 participants. Final candidates will be approved by the Department of Modern Languages and the faculty at large. If the number of applicants exceeds 12, the selection of candidates will be based on seniority, student interest, the student's personal statement, grades, class performance, and a recommendation from the adviser.
THE
EXTERNAT NOTRE DAME:
A private school in the heart of Grenoble, the Externat Notre Dame provides
classroom space for Phillips Exeter Academy students and offers courses designed
specifically for Americans in history and fine arts. Students are required to
study language and literature with the resident director of the program, an
instructor from the Modern Languages Department who accompanies the group to
Grenoble. The fifth course for Phillips Exeter credit may vary from year to
year according to the availability of instructors. Students are expected to
audit at least one elective course with their French peers. Typically the choices
might include math and art. There are required excursions in Grenoble and to
nearby areas. A trip to Paris is scheduled for the Toussaint holiday.
RULES AND REGULATIONS:
Although the structure of classes and recreation in the program in Grenoble is different from that at the Academy in Exeter, full attendance is required. The program is a serious and challenging academic routine, and students are held accountable for their studies and general conduct to the resident director. Students are expected to observe the rules of their host family, including curfews. They may not leave the city of Grenoble without permission from the resident director. Students are expected to observe the same rules of conduct defined in the "E Book". Pay particular attention to the section entitled "Major Offenses". Students applying for this program should sign below to signify that they have read, understood and agree to the above information.
