GRADING STANDARDS

MODERN LANGUAGES

HH (90 - 100) The student has thoroughly grasped the material covered. In advanced classes, the student’s ideas are well organized and show depth of understanding and original thought. Superior effort and participation are evident.

H (80 - 89.9) The student shows ability in understanding and using the language, and a solid grasp of the material covered. Ideas are coherent and expressed with grammatical accuracy. Strong effort and participation are evident.

HP (70 - 79.9) Comprehension and use of the language are adequate, and the student is making effective progress. Ideas are presented in a generally comprehensible manner but with lack of clarity and accuracy. Effort and participation are evident.

P (60 - 69.9) The student is weak in understanding and handling the language, but has met the minimum standard. Improvement is needed in effort and participation.

U This rating indicates such inadequacies in comprehension and handling of the language that the student cannot advance at the normal rate established by the department. In some cases, despite adequate ability, the lack of effort, preparation and involvement is such that the student has not adequately learned the material.

3rd, 4th and 5th Forms: ¼ Fall Term, ¼ Winter Term, ¼ Spring Term, ¼ Final Exam

6th Form: 1/3 Fall Term, 1/3 Winter Term, 1/3 Spring Term

 

CLASSICS

HH (90 - 100) A student’s work has been clearly outstanding. Translations have reflected originality as well as accuracy. The student has consistently demonstrated a genuine curiosity about the subject and has helped to elevate the level of class discussion.

H (80 - 89.9) Daily assignments have been thoroughly prepared. Translations have consistently reflected accuracy. The student has demonstrated a strong commitment to the rigors of learning ancient languages and has had a positive influence on class discussion.

HP (70 - 79.9) Daily assignments have been completed but with some degree of inaccuracy. Although acceptable, the student’s work reveals areas in need of improvement. The student has demonstrated an average level of proficiency.

P (60 - 69.9) The student’s work is clearly in need of improvement. Significant issues of grammar and/or vocabulary may not have been mastered. Work may not have been completed. A student may have demonstrated a marginal commitment to the subject.

U (60 or below) The student’s work has failed to meet minimal standards. Assignments may have
been neglected. Major amounts of material may not have been mastered.
